If you look at the Canon XL2 specifications you will discover the camera shoots 16:9 video at 962x480 pixels.

In Final Cut Pro there are two methods of setting up your capture settings for XL2 16:9 footage
that both end with the same result.

To set up your capture settings in Final Cut Pro go to
Final Cut Pro/A/V Settings/Capture Settings/
